After three days down and out with the flu, this was my first day back out amongst the living. It was cold, I was on lots of medication, but I wanted to see a bit of the city since I missed out on two previous stops. They have a great historic streetcar system in Nagasaki and a day pass is only $5, so that option was perfect for someone feeling about 75% normal.

Mama really wanted to visit the Peace Park so we hopped on the line that took us about 15 stops north of the port terminal. That ride was a nice little overview of the city and gave us ideas of where we might want to go next. The park itself was a bit disappointing. The main sculpture was under construction or being cleaned so was completely covered with scaffolding and tarps, with only a large photo of what was underneath. There were some other smaller sculptures and the remainder of a few building foundations but overall it was not very interesting. It also felt really cold up there, so I had to get back to the heated streetcar before my ears and fingers got too cold!

On our way back down towards town, we hoppped off near the Chinatown and just wandered around by the river, which was decorated with lanterns and inflated pigs for the Chinese New Year. The main pedestrian street in Chinatown had lots of street vendors selling steamed buns, dumplings and other delights. I grabbed a steamed bun because no matter what bug I’m still getting over, I cannot resist Asian street food. I’m starting to feel better already!

I only gave myself 4 hours off the boat to roam around in the cold, so we just wandered around some shops and started to head back at this point. It wasn’t the fullest day but I was just happy to be feeling better and to get out of my room! The movies on the boat are horrible and there is only so much one person can take!
