Ko Pha Ngan, Thailand

Saturday, March 9

I cannot begin to explain how wonderful it has been to just relax and enjoy since I have arrived at Wonderland on Monday.   This is my first weekend here so some of my new friends and I rented scooters, broke free of the “bubble” of Wonderland and explored Ko Pha Ngan island.

Koh Ma beach

This island is perfect.  The perfect size for riding around on little motor bikes, the perfect temperature when you’re zipping around with the wind in your hair, the perfect water and beaches, perfectly reasonable prices on food and drink, and beyond perfect sunsets.

A group of about 15 of us from Wonderland ended up at Malibu Beach on the north side of the island.  The water was warm and crystal clear and what I really loved is there were not any resorts around so the crowd was small and felt local-ish.

A couple of us went on to Koh Ma, a more popular beach with tons of resorts around it.  It was getting to be sunset so the views were terrific, but I definitely didn’t like the crowd as much.

Amazing sunset at Koh Ma

Sunday we headed into Thong Sala which is the closest town to us and where the pier is that we were all dropped off at via ferry boat when we arrived.  It’s really cute with a lot of shops, restaurants (it’s so hot to be vegan here), bars, the main post office, etc.

After an hour or two of walking we hit the scooters again and drove up the west coast of the island leisurely until we came across Secret Beach.  We stopped here for some lunch and a few naughty beverages in the sun.  After about 2 hours sitting there, we hopped on the scooters again and drove more north to Salad Beach to watch the sunset. Pictures do it all so much more justice than my words!

Finally, we went back into town for dinner at the night market.  So delicious!  It was Maria’s last night on the island so we decided to skip Wonderland dinner and celebrate!

I just wrote a post similar to yours about Koh Pha Ngan. I am SO glad I read your post because I could not remember the beach I went to until I read what you wrote. It was Koh Ma! I went snorkeling there, and it was a hilarious disaster as the water is incredibly shallow and one giant sandbar! But beautiful all the same. Your pictures look just like I remember the beach. I also have some beautiful sunset photos from there 🙂 Looks like you had the best time!

I was so surprised too about how shallow the water was! The sandbar goes out so far! The sunset from this beach was one of the best I saw on the island though! I miss it!!
